In 1991 my mother quit her high-paying job, let go of the benefits, and followed her dream to care for children by opening her home to the community as a daycare. She called her business Tender Heart Daycare. I got to be a part of the joyful chaos for decades.
The children were my good friends. As I grew up I would spend my time after school playing with the younger kids and helping my mother. I went to college for years and years and never found anything I loved to do until my mom gave me the opportunity to work with her in 2013.
She and I had a large home daycare and we had as many as 14 children at once. It was challenging, inspiring, and fulfilling. In 2016 Mom retired after caring for dozens of children for 25 years. I provided daycare to children solo then took time off to have two babies of my own. In 2023 I earned my license to have a small home daycare. I get to continue the wild experience of raising and helping to raise confident, intelligent, creative, and kind people.
I am a California Child Abuse Mandated Reporter, I had training with American Red Cross, I am certified in adult and pediatric first aid/CPR/AED, and I have a Childcare Health and Safety Certification. The adults of the house have had a criminal background check, a fingerprint scan, a Child Abuse Central Index check completed by the Department of Justice, and have proof of a current negative TB test.
The kids enjoy crafts, science, music, educational shows, books, and lots of toys for expanding young minds. They get messy with sensory activities and they release energy playing inside and outside. The kids have multiple play spaces: the grassy and flowery fenced-in front yard, the covered back yard patio, the toy-filled play room, and the kitchen for baking, eating, and doing homework, projects, and art.
We move our bodies with yoga and exercise videos and we have freestyle dance parties. We go for walks. We dig in the dirt, we touch bugs and worms and snails. We practice washing or hands, waiting our turn, and sharing. We spend time in gardens and around animals including dogs and cats.
Each day I take photos or videos of special moments so I can share them with the parents.
I offer complete meals for breakfast, morning snack, lunch, and afternoon snack, guided by the state’s child nutrition recommendations.
We celebrate a routine of eating healthy foods and trying new foods. I want the kids to realize the value of food. From planting seeds, to picking and tasting crops, to talking about the “super powers” foods can give our bodies, to preparing meals, and then enjoying them together like a little family; kids should be involved. We eat a variety of food straight out of our home garden.
Children have a short amount of time to be silly and rowdy before they are sat at a desk for a couple decades in school. With transitional kindergarten, all children have a year before kindergarten to practice their abc’s and 123’s. While we do spend time talking about letters and numbers, we mostly focus on values like curiosity, developing a growth mindset, and getting along with others.
The most beautiful times in the week are when we are so engaged in something that we lose track of time. We have the freedom to be in awe over a critter we found, to walk a little slower with wide eyes, and to make a short book last a bit longer by discussing details and making up our own details.
We live and learn at a pace that allows time for observation, questions, and imagination We have the opportunity to be calm together, muse, and dream. The kids feel the connection in the moments when we are gathered together, loud, laughing, and wild.
